Ponton Gallery
Director
2004–2015
The Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design’s (MOME) Ponton Gallery was opened in the Castle District, a culturally lively part of Budapest with several galleries and exhibition spaces, at the start of 2004. The 300 m² venue presented works on about 250 m². I worked as the director throughout the 12-year operation of the gallery. On one hand, the gallery continued the legacy of Tölgyfa Gallery, the university’s former exhibition space, but due to its scale and increased dimensions, it was also suited to host exhibits of international standard.

Developing and project management for international (travelling) exhibits
This was where the works of the university’s graduating students were showcased every year, exams open to the public and DLA exhibits were held, and needless to say, the gallery’s activity was intertwined with the life of its owner and parent institution in many other ways, as well (e.g. in the form of thematic summary exhibits or life-work exhibitions). The gallery’s goals were to develop visual culture, and to elevate the creative fields of new craft and design to the level of conventional wisdom. The works of the young designer generation offered a glimpse into work at the university to the public, at the same time, the gallery was also suited to position the achievements of Hungary’s intellectual capital in a broader context. Besides all of that, a third of the approx. 10 exhibitions a year were independent of the university, and tied in with the events, current trends and blood stream of the international design scene. The key objective of work here was to shift emphasis away from the sector-based segregation of the various branches of art to compatibility, mutually inspiring ideas, i.e. to a grand unity. There were a number of exhibits that combined multiple branches of art and creative areas at once. Ponton Gallery took on a missionary role in raising the matter of Hungarian object culture to a common cause, making it a part of our cultural identity.
